Jivamukti Focus of the Month

SEPTEMBER 2019

JIVAMUKTI YOGA FOCUS OF THE MONTH: THE SECRETS WE HOLD INSIDE

Each month Jivamukti Yoga has a special Focus of the Month, which is reflected in our yoga classes. Ever changing new inspirations help to change your perspective on the way of Yoga so you can come to new conclusions on your yoga practice.

▲▼ THE CURRENT FOCUS OF THE MONTH IN ENGLISH:

YS 1.11 - Anubhūta visayāsampramosah smritih

Memory (Smrti) is the calling up or retaining of past experiences.

The Yoga Sūtras of Patanjali by Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati

The reasons for holding a secret – a kept and unspoken memory or piece of knowledge – are many: to surprise a loved one, to not hurt someone’s feelings; we keep secrets out of fear, pride or embarrassment. Those are the conscious secrets, the ones we are aware of, they are often silent and surface by a trigger, or a reminder in the form of a smell, a sight, a sound, a texture.

There are also those secrets we keep that we aren’t aware of. Unknown secrets that hide deep within the cells of our bodies: memories from before we had conscious memory, memories that have meanings which are too hard or subtle for us to understand and make sense of, memories unregistered by the conscious brain because of a trauma; memories and samskaras (impressions from past) leave subtle impressions and unconsciously affect our habits, self-perceptions, expectations or disposition.

Neuroscience shows that, in a traumatic event, the parts of our brain involved in memory formation and speech shut down. It is a form of protection, what we sometimes call “selective memory”. Our bodies, however, remember everything, so that input into our senses activates these hidden memories that might bring up images, but other times just affecting our mood or nervous system making us anxious, angry, scared or sad without an explanation at the conscious level.

Interoception is the brain’s ability to sense the internal state of the body and become aware of its feelings and needs. Interoceptive awareness opens up the pathways for secrets to be communicated, received and understood by our minds so that then they can be processed and or released. The most essential tools for this to happen are movement and breath, asana and pranayama. With these, stored memories arise, ideally within the safe space of our yoga practice, so that we can work through them and free ourselves from the impressions.

Different parts of our bodies hold different types of messages and feelings: It is believed that – the hips hide fear, anxiety and sadness or any moment related to them; the shoulders, where we “carry the weight of the world”, store the inability to let go and carry our burdens; the lower back keeps our guilt and repressed feelings; the knees are the joints of ego and pride, of the inability to bend; while neck pain is stubbornness, refusing to see the other side of the story. The chakras are keys to understanding our world of relationships. When the wheels turn they let the energy flow, when they don’t the energy gets blocked. Memory can be felt in the pain of a body part or in the blocked chakra, and can also be released through its movement.

In trauma therapy, addiction recovery, or in the treatment of mood disorders such as depression or anxiety – yoga allows practitioners to reconnect with the bodies they have often lost connection to. It provides an opportunity to rebuild the trust that was broken when it did not protect at the time of an accident or abuse, or when it did not warn of a disease. The repressed memories, mistrust in oneself and the surrounding world can resurface opening the way up for recovery, cleansing and moving forward. Yoga can allow us to become aware that we are able to know what we need and that we have the tools to give it to ourselves.

Many of us have been in a yoga class and felt emotions unexpectedly surface in the form of anger, stress, sadness or happiness. Often we don’t need to have suffered a traumatic event to experience disconnection from our bodies. For many of us, when we begin our yoga journey, simple instructions such as “right foot forward” or “bind left arm around right thigh” can seem like mathematical equations to get to the moon. Becoming acquainted with our hand, foot, or hip is the first step to opening up the lines of communication with one’s body and the emotions and memories it stores.

Yoga is that friend who sits across the table from you when you have a secret and can’t help yourself from telling them. Yoga is that friend who helps make sense of it all.

▲▼ MORE INFO ON SHIATSU WITH DECHEN THURMAN

Dechen ThurmanDECHEN THURMAN is not only known as an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher, but also has won a lot of praise as a Certified Shiatsu Instructor: "He's the brother of Uma and the son of Robert. He played Guildenstern in Michael Almereyda's "Hamlet" movie and Patrick Bateman in Gerald Fox' Bret Easton Ellis film. But more importantly, his unique form of bodywork - as in Yoga and Shiatsu massage - has won international praise in the last couple of years." TIME OUT NEW YORK.

DECHEN'S TRAINING Dechen was trained in Shiatsu by world-renowned Japanese master Ohashi at the Ohashi  Institute - Touch for Peace in New York. The unique Ohashiatsu method of healing touch developed by Ohashi is also a method of meditation and a method of self-improvement and has taken Shiatsu/Acupressure to a new level. You haven’t truly enjoyed bodywork until you have experienced Dechens Shiatsu style method influenced by his master Ohashi. Initially developed to keep the “giver’s” body healthy, the relaxed state of the giver actually makes it more effective and more comfortable for the receiver. Shiatsu combines hands-on touch techniques, limb rotation, and stretches, in a seamless flow of movement. It is an energizing dance. All add up to a more balanced life and better health for you while you learn a healing therapy. Benefits: Movement, flexibility and endurance of yoga. Strength building and enhanced posture of Pilates. Revitalization of your own Ki– life force energy. De-stress of your body and mind. Revitalization of your spirit. Better understanding of yourself, others and nature.

OHASHI DECHEN'S TEACHER The name “Ohashi” means “big bridge” in Japanese – the perfect symbol for someone who has devoted his life to bringing Eastern modes of healing to the West. Ohashi’s modality is a unique method of healing touch cultivated and based on ancient principles of meridian energy manipulation, traditional shiatsu (acupressure), Oriental medicine, Japanese martial arts and Zen philosophy.

Ohashi’s experience with traditional oriental healing began in his infancy. Born in 1944, near Hiroshima, Japan, his weak constitution made him vulnerable to illness. As a young child his strength was restored and is maintained by healing techniques central to his teachings. Believing that the Eastern concept of health can benefit 21st century men and women, Ohashi has dedicated himself to the teaching and practice of this philosophy.

Ohashi came to the United States in 1970 after completing Chuo University and studying with different teachers of Eastern healing theory and therapies. In Washington, D.C., he became the first shiatsu therapist at the Watergate Health club, where some of the nation’s leaders became his clients, but his interest in education motivated him to start teaching. He moved to New York City where he founded the Shiatsu Education Center of America, which eventually became the Ohashi Institute. From 1974 to 2011 the Institute offered a complete study program and graduated thousands of students in Ohashi’s method of shiatsu. Aside from teaching at his own Institute, Ohashi lectured and taught internationally at other learning centers – Omega Institute, Esalen Institute, medical and chiropractic schools, retreat centers, and aesthetic conferences in the U.S., Europe and Latin America, for L’Oreal Paris, and for the International Dermal Institute. A master teacher who brings humor and joy to his classes, Ohashi enriches the lives of everyone he meets with his positive view of the human condition.

Over the years, his successful practice has attracted such notables as Liza Minelli, Martha Graham, George Balanchine, Michael York, Stan Getz, Ralph Lauren, Muhammad Ali, Ani DiFranco, Dr. Robert Thurman and Dr. Henry Kissinger. Ohashi says he learns from his clients and his students and feels honored to know all of them. Ohashi is the author of six books, which have been translated into eight languages, and 11 videos on his technique. Ohashi has been featured in many prominent cultural and trade publications, including the New York Times, Daily News, Mademoiselle, New York Magazine, Yoga Journal, Forma Italy, Olis Italy, Asahi Shinbun Japan, Yomiuri America, New York Japion, New York Shyukan Seikatsu, Self, Hoje Em Dia Brazil, Forum Germany, Top Salute Italy, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Yediot Achronot Israel, Novi List, Sensa, Massage, and Dermascope.

▲▼ MORE INFO ON DECHEN THURMAN

DECHEN THURMAN is a holistic healer based in New York City. He is an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher as well as a Shiatsu instructor trained by the world-renowned master OHASHI. Dechen creates a delicious sense of playfulness in his yoga classes. His method of healing is derived from these revered schools.
Growing up, Dechen's family was a multicultural pioneer in hosting such luminous Tibetan refugee scholars as Geshe Wangyal, Lama Govinda, Tara Tulku Rimpoche, Dr. Yeshe Donden and Gehlek Rimpoche. A paramount time in Dechen's life as he learned to cultivate his meditation practice with the help of these brilliant scholars. He first met His Holiness the Dalai Lama at age seven in Dharamsala, India.
Dechen's first taste of Jivamukti Yoga came at the age of 19. His dance teacher at Playwrights Horizons, Maude Karlsonn (nicknamed the "Swedish Mistress of Pain" by classmates), gave him a flier with a photo of Sharon Gannon in side crow position and told him to go to 2nd ave. and practice there. It was love at first class. He frequently attended class, initially as a warm-up for acting rehearsals, later for refuge from the pressures of his identity. Jivamukti Yoga was instrumental in bringing Dechen home, so to speak, back to his family's deep roots in Buddhism. Many inexplicably good things would happen to him on such a punctual basis associated with Jivamukti that his life literally depended on it. The psychospiritual investigation that Jivamukti stimulated was fundamental to his success in acting and massage. Alongside his work as a Jivamukti Yoga teacher and healer, Dechen is an accomplished actor in film and theater. He has appeared in films such as The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Hamlet, Zoolander and Gods and Generals.

▲▼ GENERAL INFO ON THE WORKSHOP PROGRAM

DAY 1: Wednesday, September 25th; 18:00-21:00 @ JYB XBerg; A Gathering

“The purpose of life is to watch and experience living; to enjoy living every moment of it; and to live in environments which are calm, quiet, slow, sophisticated, elegant, just to be. Whether you are naked or you have a golden robe on you, that doesn’t make any difference. The ideal purpose of your life is that you are grateful – great and full – that you are alive, and you enjoy it.” ~ Yogi Bhajan

Yoga is a tradition and science with roots in ancient India that has evolved through the centuries to embrace the wisdom of many places and times. Although Yoga means something different to each person, it is rooted in Oneness and returning to the Source.

Kundalini Yoga uses breath, yogic postures, and meditation to strengthen the nervous and glandular systems. Each class can help one become aware of much more than just the strength of the body. Kundalini Yoga helps to facilitate a change physically as well as emotionally and spiritually.

DAY 2: Thursday, September 26th; 05:30-07:30 @JYB Mitte; Morning Sadhana

"Sadhana means practice for spiritual connection. I love to practice Kundalini Yoga and Meditation before moving into my day. Sadhana sets my energy, my mental space, and my heart. Sadhana centers my field of awareness and enlivens my Soul." - Level One student sharing the virtues of morning Sadhana. Do not miss the wonderful chance to do Sadhana with Gusushabd and/or Gurmukh on Thursday morning.

18:00-21:00 @JYB Mitte; Being Human Is Being Intuitive

Living an Absolutely Happy Life With Kundalini Yoga Yogis and other wise men and women have all asked, “As humans, do we have the right to live an absolutely happy life?” The answer they found is an unequivocal, “Yes!” Yet the route to leading the joyous and abundant life that we desire remains elusive for so many of us. Kundalini Yoga offers a tangible path to living the happy life that we all would like to live. The practice of Kundalini Yoga trains us to leave behind our habitual way of being, and to become more attuned to living by our intuition. By subjecting our ego to our intuition, we free ourselves to fashion a life that satisfies us and the greater good.

▲▼ ABOUT DAVID

About David

David Williams has been practicing yoga daily, without interruption, since 1971.

In 1972, David met K. P. Manju , the son of K. Pattabhi Jois, and saw him demonstrate the Ashtanga Yoga Primary series. This was at Dr. Swami Gitananda's Ananda Ashram in Pondicherry, South India, where David received his Six Month Yoga Teachers Training Course Certification.

In 1973, David began learning Ashtanga Yoga from K. Pattabhi Jois at his home in Mysore, India, and he became the first non-Indian taught the complete Ashtanga Yoga system of asanas and pranayama directly from Jois. In 1974, David became one of the first non-Indians certified to teach the Ashtanga Yoga asanas. He is also one of the few people ever certified by Jois to teach the Ashtanga Yoga pranayama.

In 1975, David introduced K. Pattabhi Jois and Manju Jois to America when he, along with Nancy Gilgoff, organized and sponsored their first visit to Encinitas, California.

David is responsible for teaching the Ashtanga Yoga system to many of today's leading teachers and practitioners, including David Swenson, Danny Paradise, Cliff Barber, Baptiste Marceau, Bryan Kest, Jonny Kest, Clifford Sweatte, Ricky Tran, Kathy Cooper, and Andrew Eppler.

David is 70 years old. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has lived on the island of Maui, Hawaii, since l976.

▲▼ WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT HIS LAST WORKSHOP

What others are saying about his last workshop:

Hi David,

Just thought I'd write to you while the going is good. I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and am very happy that I had the experience of sharing yoga with you. For many years now, I have been questioning the way that Ashtanga has been taught and I too have been saddened by the injuries and bad name that Ashtanga has in the yoga community. I started yoga to find freedom in my life and then one day I looked around and realized that I was surrounded by a system that was rigid and full of doctrines and dogmas.

To hear you, the 'legend of Ashtanga yoga,' come out and say that, "if it hurts you are doing it wrong," that "it should feel wonderful," and that "the person who enjoys it the most today is the one most likely to practice tomorrow," was so refreshing and so important.

You have inspired me to practice daily for the rest of my life, to love it, and to get real.

Thanks.

Aloha mate,

Mark

Thanks David for unshackling years and years of self-doubt that certain individuals along the rungs of the "Yoga hierarchy" have bestowed in me because I didn't and wouldn't agree with their dogmas and doctrines (I heard you well and clear Mark). It enabled me to completely change my daily practice and my way of teaching this very art of Yoga with a clear conscience and total freedom. Good on ya.

George

Dear David,

My epiphany... How could so many of us have it wrong? Could it be that we were ALL just taught wrong? We all see the form and the strength and have been taught to focus on the outer alignment. All of the workshops and teachers focus on advancing your postures, not your prana. We are believing that the more advanced postures bring some kind of secret, and try to perfect the posture like we see it. We desire to understand, but keep searching in the wrong place, led by teachers who are doing the same thing. The search never ends because the information is never clear. After over 20 years of workshops, study and practice, I feel like I am also guilty of teaching wrong knowledge. It makes me cry to think that I may have hurt someone by my own ignorance. You not only have lit my candle, but blown my mind to realize that I made it too hard on myself and others. You have given me the missing puzzle pieces and my search is over. I only hope I can convey your message to others.

Happy travels,

Laura

P.S. Jalandara Bandha was never a focus point for me, I never understood it. My neck has been stiff for a year, and it feels better already. Too many injuries later, I thank you!

▲▼ AN OPEN LETTER TO GERMAN YOGA STUDENTS

Greetings and Salutations from Maui!

When I teach Yoga, I am always reminded that there are some major concepts about how Ashtanga Yoga is taught and practiced, based on my personal study, observation, and uninterrupted practice, that I feel are important to share with my classes.

First, and foremost, I hope you can learn from me that in your practice, "If it hurts, you are doing it wrong." Through the years, I have observed that too many people are hurting themselves and hurting others. Yoga practice can be (and should be) pleasant from the beginning to the end. What is important is the mula bandha and deep breathing. With daily practice, it is inevitable that one will become more flexible.

From my own practice and observation, I learned that pushing your current limitations to get into a position could result in injury, which results in one needing to rest the injury to recover so they can resume their practice. This entire sequence of events is not only unpleasant, it is contrary to my belief that through slow, steady, daily practice one can achieve greater flexibility by generating one's own internal heat to relax into positions, rather than being forced into a position. I have observed this slower, steadier method is not only healthier, but it allows one to develop greater flexibility of a more lasting nature, than the kind that is forced. Unfortunately, as many have found, pushing one's current limitations can result in having to severely curtail or limit activity during recovery. This cycle can lead to unpleasant associations with one's Yoga practice, rather than the pleasant experiences I work to instill, and that I feel are necessary for a lifelong practice.

In my workshop, I want to show each of you how you can do the Ashtanga Yoga series in a lifelong practice that is a completely pleasant experience.

I suspect that when you first saw the practice, you said to yourself, "If I did this, it would be great for me!" So, here you are--you have observed the practice, and you want to continue it. The key is being able to continue practicing Yoga for the rest of your life. From over 45 years of observing thousands of people practicing Yoga, I realize that those who continue are the ones who are able to figure out how to make it enjoyable. They look forward to their daily practice and nothing can keep them from finding the time to do it. It becomes one of the most pleasant parts of their day. The others, consciously, subconsciously, or unconsciously, quit practicing. It is my goal to do everything I can to inspire you to establish your Yoga practice, not just for the few days we are together, but for the rest of your life.

Secondly, I hope to share with you my belief that the ultimate goal of Yoga is not to increase flexibility and strength. Increased flexibility and strength are simply the natural results and benefits of daily practice. While additional flexibility and strength are important and apparent benefits of Yoga, I believe the goals of Yoga practice are self-realization and keeping oneself balanced and healthy on a daily basis. Health is your greatest wealth. The body's DNA knows how to heal itself; all it needs is the energy. The energizing, rejuvenating Yoga practices can be the source of this energy.

Lastly, I hope you will find that my workshop is for everyone at all levels. Occasionally I asked if someone is "good at Yoga." I quickly respond that the best Yogi is not the one who is most flexible, but the one who is the most focused on what he or she is doing, the one most intensely doing the mula bandha and deep breathing. It is with some sadness that I have observed people "competing with their Yoga practice." I have also observed others who are discouraged in their practice because they feel this competition and worry that they will never be able to do their practice with the flexibility and skill of others more advanced in the series. My goal is to convey the idea that the greatest Yogi is the one who enjoys his or her Yoga practice the most, not the one who can achieve the ultimate pretzel position. It is my belief, which I hope to convey to you, that in your practice of this moving meditation, what is important, is what is invisible to the observer, what is within each of you.

I believe in the Yoga. I believe that anyone who has the desire can do the Ashtanga practice, perhaps with personal modifications, in a way that is pleasant. For years, I have said, "If someone said to me, 'You have 15 minutes, one hour, etc., do something good for yourself. You can use barbells, bicycles, or whatever,' I would start doing the Ashtanga Yoga Salutations to the Sun and Primary Series." If someone can show me something better, I am ready to learn it. In my more than 45 years of searching, I have learned five or six systems of Yoga practice. For myself, I have not found a better physical, mental, and emotional fitness program than the Ashtanga Yoga system. I hope you will feel the same after our days together.

I look forward to sharing my practice and experience with you.

Yours in Yoga,

David Williams

Dates and Times: Sat.& Sun.: Oct.12&13, 19&20, 26&27, Nov.02&03, 09&10, 9:00-16:30 plus 2 hours homework each day

Language: English (Anja also speaks German, so individual tips/hints in German will be possible but comprehension of English will be necessary to successfully attend this training)

Pls. note: The tuition for this course does not include any food, accommodation, or travel services. All these extra costs need to be borne and booked independently by the participant.

Unlimited Classes: At Jivamukti Yoga Berlin, you will also receive Unlimited free classes for the duration of your training (from Oct. 11 until Nov. 11, 2019) that is already included in the tuition, as we strongly encourage participants to practice as many additional Jivamukti Yoga classes as possible alongside the training.

Curriculum: The curriculum of this training presents 5 units, each unit is 15 hours. Thus, you will, upon successful participation, receive a certificate* of attendance for 75 hours of training in the Jivamukti Yoga method. (*please see separate detailed section below on the types of certification that can be achieved through this training).
The Jivamukti Yoga 75 hour training is aimed to provide you with a blueprint for incorporating the physical, psychological, spiritual and mystical aspects of yoga into modern life, without losing sight of the universal goal of the practice: liberation. Jivamukti Yoga’s focus on a non-dualistic view of life (the interconnectedness of all) awakens in the practitioner not only the need to protect the environment and all the animals and plants that share the planet with us, but also teaches skills to confidently achieve those goals for oneself as well as lead others to live in harmony with the planet.

Each day of the training consists of 5.5 hours of teacher training at the studio, a lunch break plus 2 hours of home-work that you need to work on by yourself.
You will receive a training manual with an overview and summary of the curriculum content and with your home-work assignments.
Every day of the training begins with a short meditation and an exploration into a topic of yoga philosophy and a mantra that is quintessential to the Jivamukti Yoga method. There is a daily practice of the Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class, followed by a practical and/or a lecture. The focus of this training will be on teaching you how to teach and on the methodology. This way, upon successful completion of this training, our aim is for you to be able to teach a Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class by yourself.
As part of the curriculum of the 75 hour Jivamukti Teacher Training, our goal is for you to learn:

  • how to teach the exact sequence of the Jivamukti Yoga Spiritual Warrior class
  • how to teach the Jivamukti Magic 10 as developed by Sharon Gannon
  • how to apply and teach according to the art of Vinyasa Krama
  • how to give safe assists for the asanas within the Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class
  • the foundations of the five tenets of Jivamukti Yoga (Ahimsa, Bhakti, Shastra, Nada, Dhyana)
  • the meaning of three Sanskrit Mantras, that are quintessential to the Jivamukti Yoga method, and how to chant them
  • what asana practice has to do with the relationship to ourselves, and to the world around us
  • how to properly receive and give feedback from/to others

▲▼ WHAT CERTIFICATION CAN BE OBTAINED THROUGH THIS TRAINING

Certificiate of Completion: After successful and complete attendance of all parts of this training, you will be issued a Certificate of Completion certifying that you took 75hours of foundational training in the Jivamukti Yoga method, namely how to teach the Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class.

Please note: This certificate of completion alone does NOT authorize you to teach Jivamukti Yoga Spiritual Warrior classes nor does taking this 75hr foundational training alone authorize you to teach any other Jivamukti Yoga class nor to use the brand name Jivamukti Yoga for any of your other yoga classes or similar yoga teaching services. These limitations will be stated in fine print on your certificate.

Teaching a test class in order to receive authorization to teach Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior classes: If you want to receive authorization to teach a Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class without taking the full 300hour Jivamukti Teacher Training, it is suggested that, after completion of our 75hr training, you first teach a number of classes, free of charge, in your community or to your friends/family, in order to enable you to confidently teach a test class at a Jivamukti Yoga School of your choice in front of the Director of the school, a 75hour Jivamukti Teacher Training Facilitator and/or the school’s JTAP Program director. For this test class, which has to be passed within one year of the completion of your 75hr training, you need to pay an additional examination fee, which at JYB is corresponding to the 95min private class fee of the examiner and includes taking your test class for 60 minutes and giving you feedback for 30 minutes. If you pass this test class, you will be issued another written certificate that will say: “You are now authorized to teach a Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior Class”. If you do not pass, the test class, you may repeat it for an unlimited number of times within one year (subject to the examination fee being paid for each test class).

Please note: This certificate will also state, in fine print: “You cannot call yourself a Jivamukti Yoga Teacher until you attend a 300 HR TT program, nor may you teach any other Jivamukti Yoga classes or use the brand name Jivamukti Yoga for any of your other yoga classes or similar yoga teaching services.”.

Taking the 300 HR Jivamukti Teacher Training: Alternatively, you may also take the full 300 HR Jivamukti Teacher Training at a later point which authorizes you to teach any Jivamukti Yoga class, including the Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior class, without passing a test class. And the best thing is that the fees you paid for your 75HR training will be offset against your 300HR tuition as follows:
Sign up to 300hr JYTT within one year after 75hour TT completion: 100% of JY75 tuition paid
Sign up to 300hr JYTT within two years after 75hour TT completion: 50% of JY75 tuition paid
Sign up to 300hr JYTT more than 2 years after 75hour TT completion: 0% of JY75 tuition paid

▲▼ WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I MISS PARTS OF THE TRAINING

For all classes/sessions/parts of this course it is crucial that you arrive on time. There will be no (partial or full) refund of the course fee if you miss any classes of the course. Please note that participation will be monitored, and a certificate of completion will only be issued if you take part in the full 75 hours of this course. The main requirement for successfully completing the training and receiving the certificate is that you need to “show up” and “be present” and engaged at all sessions, complete all homework, learn the sequence, and participate in the final review. It is up to the discretion of JYB and the facilitator of the 75 Hour training to grant a reasonable extension for a student to complete any work or to deny giving a student a certificate for stating the reason(s) in writing. However, in case of missed classes, sessions, regardless of the reason for missing them, the certificate will only be issued if they have been completed, which will involve an additional fee to compensate the facilitator for taking the time to re-teach the missed parts of the program just for you. This fee will be the pro-rated undiscounted training price in case you re-take the missed parts of the training in a following training. In case you ask the facilitator to teach the missed parts outside of another training just for you, this price will be multiplied by the factor of 9. I.e. if you need to re-take 2 hours of the training, you would have to pay 1.539 EUR / 75 * 2 * 9 = 369.36 EUR to the facilitator.

David EssingDavid Essing (Assistant)

During my training as a stage dancer, I came in contact with yoga for the first time and was fascinated by the inner strength and calm that I experienced through practice. For about 10 years I sporadically went to yoga classes, mostly when I was mentally or physically not so well. While working as a performer in London, I discovered Jivamukti Yoga. It was the first style that got me on the mat every day and made me develop a steady practice. In 2015 I completed the 300h Teacher Training and started the 800h Jivamukti Teacher Apprentice Program (JTAP) under the supervision of my mentor Anja Kühnel at Jivamukti Berlin. Meanwhile I decided to end my dance career and started studying Osteopathy in 2017. Since October 2018 I am an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher and more recently a mentor in the JTAP program.

IN-CLASS PRIVATES (ICPs) AT JIVAMUKTI YOGA BERLINICP at JYB

An In-class Private (ICP) may be the best yoga class you’ve ever taken. During your regular group class, another teacher individually assists you throughout, refining and adding depth to your practice. In the hands of a certified Jivamukti teacher, you are comfortably guided through each and every movement of the class experience. Whether you are sitting, standing or moving through vinyasa, the teacher skillfully offers hands-on assists that take the recipient deeper into their practice. It is not just the physical form that benefits, as the subtle body is also energetically moved into alignment.Often psychological blockages prevent us from experiencing the inherent bliss of yoga. Sometimes, no matter how long we practice or how hard we try, we are unable to reach the next level. Through the guidance and trust created during an ICP, anxiety and fear diminish and self-confidence grows, allowing for major breakthroughs to occur. The ICP experience is unique to the Jivamukti Method and as therapeutic as a full body massage.

DETOX MASSAGE WITH JULI WERNER (OPTIONAL)
I love to touch. It is unbelievable what is possible through a touch. Awareness can grow with a conscious touch. Far away from concepts, beliefs or judgement, we get in touch with simplicity. Then total relaxation is possible. Everything is okay as it is. We are arriving in our inner home with ourselves. Massage is always leading inwards. I am supporting this inner acceptance through touch, so you can check in with yourself and be okay with your inner state. I am looking forward to a common travel into the now, towards Love.

JULI'S MASSAGE TECHNIQUES:

AYURVEDIC YOGA MASSAGE: Relaxing whole body massage, to soften the body and dissolve old and deep rooted tensions. For straightening the body and bringing you back to balance through soft stretches. Stimulating your blood circulation and deepening and relaxing your breath.

DEEP TISSUE MESSAGE: Loosening up deep tissues with stroking movements.

REBALANCING: Was developed in the Osho-community and is taught since 1980. It was the first real connection of deep tissue massage, soft touch, “flowing” touch and meditation. The focus here is always on loving the body and becoming more aware of the body.

JOINT-RELEASE-TECHNIQUE: Joint release through rhythmic swinging and shaking. The body is moved in a passive way by becoming aware of holding and movement patterns.

DETOX RETREAT MASSAGE PRICES: 60min=99 EUR, 30min=63 EUR.

▲▼ MORE INFORMATION ON THE RETREAT LOCATION AND ACCOMODATION

Jivamukti Yoga Rügen Retreat

Tucked away in a remote corner of Rügen, amongst wheat fields, paddocks, arrays of bird nests, and bays of the Baltic, at the end of a tiny road, there is small village with a great historic granary, constructed in 1904.

Today the granary has been sensibly restored, keeping most of the details from the old design and thus retaining a generous and enchanting air with bright loft-like spaces that are perfect for practice and relaxation. Just the right space for those who seek to breathe deeply again.

Jivamukti Yoga Rügen Retreat

In addition to the cozy rooms, there are numerous lounges and fireplaces all over the building for hanging out and having interesting conversations as well as quiet alcoves to read a book. In the evenings we can warm ourselves in front of the fireplaces or in the sauna and can also enjoy the view from the big wooden terraces over the virtually untouched nature around us.

Generous 1.000 sqm over two stories, a 150+ sqm loft for yoga classes, huge open style kitchen, saunas and fireplaces, huge terraces: Our 1904 granary which we have exclusively for our groups just embodies freedom, luxury, and coziness. A perfect venue to retreat, detox and immerse into the teachings of Jivamukti Yoga.

Jivamukti Yoga Rügen Retreat

The nearby bird colony and beaches allow for spectacular walks and swims under the big skies of Germany's north. The short walk to the beach alone allows one to dive back into nature. In the evenings, there are a number of places to take it easy: in the sauna, around the fireplaces, or on the many terraces the site has to offer.

Jivamukti Yoga Rügen Retreat

This is the ideal setting to enjoy the clear air in between yoga classes before coming back into our cozy space with Sauna and radiant floor heating, which you might recognize from our Jivamukti Studio in Berlin Mitte.

Jivamukti Yoga Rügen Retreat

Our old yet very modern granary on Rügen is spoiling us with its warm atmosphere, sauna and a lot of space to arrive. In pure and remote nature we can recharge our energies and relax and detox together with Yoga, Pranayama and Meditation in order to leave behind the old year and start fresh in 2019.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: FOR PROLONGING YOUR STAY (INCL. YOGA AND FOOD ON THESE DAYS):
A long weekend is over too fast and we get sad to have to return too quickly, especially considering the travel effort to arrive. For everyone who shares our opinion and is able to invest a bit more time, we rented the granary for 5 days so you can start this retreat softly on Thursday let it fade away into Monday afternoon. We would be thrilled if you are arriving early with us and/or leave later and offer the following options (including additional detox food and yoga program) for a deeper experience:

Arrive 1 day earlier – Thursday from 14:30 on: +99 EUR
This small surcharge includes 1 additional night (plus your chosen room upgrade option), 2 additional yoga classes, 3 additional meals and 24 hours more at the sea. This means a more intimate setting, since usually there are fewer participants, and gives the advantage of arriving during an off-peak time, avoiding the stress of rush hour. See also the preliminary schedule in the drop-down-menu higher above.

Arrive ½ day earlier – Friday from 08:00 on: +45 EUR
This small surcharge includes 1 additional yoga class, 1 additional brunch and a couple of hours more at the sea. Please know that you can move into your room only after 14:00 of your arrival day, even though we try our best to have your rooms ready before. There is a train ride at 4:48 from Berlin that arrives at 8:18 in Samtens. If people book this train, we will adapt the schedule for the morning class accordingly.

Stay ½ day longer – until Sunday evening: +45 EUR
This small surcharge includes 1 additional yoga class + Satsang, 2 additional meals (Tea-time + dinner) and a couple of hours more at the sea for everyone who wants to leave Sunday evening or night. Please be aware that you have to check out from your booked room at 12:00 on your departure day. Although we will try to arrange a late check-out for you, it cannot be guaranteed. The latest train departs at 19:41 from Samtens and will arrive in Berlin at 23:28 or in Hamburg at 23:50.

Stay 1 day longer – until Monday 12:00: +99 EUR
For everyone who wants to leave calmly on Monday, this small surcharge includes 2 additional nights (plus your chosen room upgrade option), 2 additional yoga classes + Satsang, 3 additional meals and 24 hours more at the sea. This means a more intimate setting, since usually there are fewer participants, and with the advantage of arriving during an off-peak time, avoiding the stress of rush hour. See also the preliminary schedule in the drop-down-menu higher above.

Stay 2 full days longer – from Thursday 14:30 until Monday 12:00: +180 EUR
For everyone who wants to arrive and leave calmly on Thursday/Monday, this surcharge includes 2 additional nights (plus your chosen room upgrade option), 4 additional yoga classes + Satsang, 6 additional meals and 48 hours more at the sea. This means a more intimate setting, since usually there are fewer participants, and with the advantage of arriving during an off-peak time, avoiding the stress of rush hour. See also the preliminary schedule in the drop-down-menu higher above.

LOYALITY DISCOUNTS: 18 EUR discount for these reasons (cumulative): (1) You have an ongoing Jivamukti Berlin Unlimited contract. (2)You have been part of one (or more) Jivamukti Yoga Retreats (sorry, only 1x 18 EUR discount, even though you have been part of numerous retreats) (3) You are a registered Jivamukti Yoga Teacher.

OPTIONAL TRAVEL SERVICES THAT ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE BASE PRICE:

  • Travel costs to and from the granary are NOT included in the price and has to be organized and paid for on your own. We recommend the train connection Berlin-Hbf. => Samtens, which leaves Thursday and Friday with a transit in Stralsund at 10:32 from Berlin-Hbf and arrives in time for Check-in at 14:18. This train departs every hour and whoever wants to arrive very early on Friday to participate at the morning yoga class (see Early Checkin), could take the train at 4:42 to arrive in Samtens at 8:18.For the departure day, there is a train connection at 12:37 that arrives in Berlin at 16:15. There are similar good connections from all Germany cities, as Hamburg 10:17 => 14:18 and so on. The regular price per ride with Deutsche Bahn is around 46EUR, but with a clever combination of sharing a ‘Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket’ (on Thursday) and a ‘Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket) back to Berlin on Sunday, 5 persons can travel for 120 EUR (24 EUR p.p. for the round trip).
  • It is 16km from Samtens to the granary. We can offer you a pick-up shuttle service for 18 EUR p.p., if there are minimum two persons arriving at the same time.
  • Alternatively it is definitely possible to arrive by car – approximately 3,5hrs drive from Berlin
  • We are happy to help with carpooling organization. We can help you with finding people to share a car and can offer a limited number of shuttle spots from Berlin (108 EUR p.p.)

CANCELLATION AND CURTAILMENT INSURANCE: As we do need to be able to depend on your booking, there is a cancellation fee charged if you cannot take part in the retreat/intensive booked due to reason out of our control (like sickness etc.). Please read the details in the registration form on this. This is why we strongly recommend that you book a cancellation and curtailment insurance (starts under 20 EUR and is one of the three best curtailment insurances, by Stiftung Warentest), which you can do in the registration form.

Our newest discovery of rugged terrain and refined accommodation makes for the ideal summer retreat. RETREAT LANGUAGE: English (Anja teaches in English but also speaks German for individual tips/assistis/questions)

THE DATES: Saturday, June 15 until Saturday, June 22 with optional early arrival/slow start on the 13th or 14th of June

THE ISLAND: “Italy without Sicily leaves no image. Sicily is the key to everything.“ - Johann Wolfgang Goethe - A Trip to Sicily

▲▼ GENERAL INFO ON THE YOGA PROGRAM & OTHER ACTIVITIES

THE THEME: As the Summer Solstice on June 21 is the astronomical marker of the height of the year, symbolically it represents the fullness of life and light. Yoga is a celebration of the Sun, the supreme consciousness that illuminates all things and makes them clear. We will deepen our practice by honoring the light and connecting to the powerful energy of the time. The same solar energy that brings seeds forth, can ripen our highest intentions into manifestation. In this celebration of life-giving fire and light, our goal is to give participants the opportunity to burn away any burdens, immerse themselves in the dynamic vastness of nature, to eat vibrant and nourishing food, and to enjoy the company of uplifting community with our Jivamukti Yoga community.

THE PROGRAM: Anja will lead a morning 3-hour asana practice, prededed by optional morning meditation, chanting, and scripture reading. These will be intensive “workshop style” classes focused around the theme of warmth, light, and abundance, preparing you for the culmination of this retreat, the summer solstice on Friday, June 21st. Anja will infuse her many years of experience from teacheing international Jivamukti Yoga retreats and Jivamukti Teacher Trainings to offer a distilled vision of the purpose of the practice. You will experience and explore different aspects of Jivamukti Yoga like asanas, kriyas, pranayama, and yogic scriptures. Each afternoon we will offer shorter asana sessions, led by one of our members of the Jivamukti Berlin teaching faculty. Afternoons will also be filled with trips to the sea, swimming in the pool, and lounging in the sun.

▲▼ MORE INFO ON THE LOCATION

THE LOCATION: Cloistered away upon a lonely hill in southeast Sicily between the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ragusa Ibla and the popular summer beach destination of Marina di Ragusa , our historic 17th century Sicilian Masseria is an oasis with lush gardens, vast patios, beautifully restored rooms, and a grand swimming pool. The entire complex is enclosed by restored ancient stone walls, featuring within them the central courtyard, the ancient villa, and surrounding suites. Situated only 10 minutes away from the Mediterranean Sea and close to a small town for shopping and exploring, the Villa is surrounded by a serene natural park with centuries-old olive, carob and almond trees, embodying the quintessential Sicilian countryside with all its historical hand cut stone masonry, pre-Christian caves, breathtaking views and hills leading to sandy beaches of the Mediterranean Sea. During the peak of the year, experience coming to full flourishing with the Scilian hills as they abound with green and vibrance.

Our Masseria grounds and a brief history of the ancient Sicilian knowledge of mathematics and astronomy

The 17th century villa that we will be exclusively having as our retreat headquarters was designed to align with the sun, featuring the summer solstice sunrise at an approximate azimuth of 54 degrees and sunset at approximate azimuth of 305 degrees. The front of the house features a round holed stone window paired with an identical feature in the back of the house. These were constructed in such a mathematically precise fashion as to capture the intense sun on the solstice. The villa was built around these markers, and means that the sun will perfectly intersect and be directly over the grounds during the solstice. We should not consider these holed stones as a precise calendars or an instruments to observe the sun’s cycle, but rather monuments that provided information on the solstices for practical and agricultural purposes. The summer solstice is often considered to be a celebration of Apollo and the upcoming harvest. Thus it is a time of light, fullness, power, and abundance.

It is fascinating to discover how our ancestors already thousands of years ago, were able to apply precise astronomical canons to their constructions and living quarters. They would plan the axis of their living quarters at the moment of the laying of the foundation. They would divide the arch of the daily itinerary of the sun through projecting on the ground the shade of the sun itself on a fixed pole in the style of the ancient meridian clocks. In Sicily, the sun was an object of veneration and people felt always in a position of inferiority to the Sun and all its related and inexplicable events. At the center of their lives was the Sun, the Morning star that dictated the rhythm of nature and conditioned their everyday life. It was certainly a reason of great anxiety for Sicilian people at the start of winter to see the Sun getting lower and lower on the horizon while the daylight would diminish and the dark night extend its duration. At one point the Sun seemed to fall into darkness and the fear that it might not come back was always a tragic experience that seemed to threaten life itself. With time, Sicilians noticed that on the occasion of the winter solstice the Sun would always regain its strength as an invisible force over darkness which they celebrated with rituals starting fires symbolizing their effort to give heat and light to the weakened Sun. The celebration of the returning sun continued until it reaches its pinnacle in June, where fires are burnt and the fullness of the cycle is embraced. To understand the level of mathematical and existential knowledge in the old days we need simply to look into the life and writings of some of the Sicilian people of the time. Especially to Pythagoras who founded a school on Sicily, in which initiates were sworn to secrecy and lived a communal, ascetic lifestyle. This lifestyle entailed a number of dietary prohibitions, traditionally said to have included vegetarianism, although modern scholars doubt that he ever advocated for complete vegetarianism.

The teaching most securely identified with Pythagoras is metempsychosis, or the "transmigration of souls", which holds that every soul is immortal and, upon death, enters into a new body. He may have also devised the doctrine of musica universalis, which holds that the planets move according to mathematical equations and thus resonate to produce an inaudible symphony of music. Pythagoras was credited with many mathematical and scientific discoveries, including the Pythagorean theorem, Pythagorean tuning, the five regular solids, the Theory of Proportions, the sphericity of the Earth, and the identity of the morning and evening stars as the planet Venus. In addition, to the astronomical markings, the Masseria features its own small cave cemetery or necropolis located to the west of the Villa itself in the Egyptian tradition of building cemetery and pyramids west of the village / living quarters. This cave is visible on the immediate north side of the hill halfway along the main driveway and it is aligned with the winter solstice sunrise.
